All people benefit from all restrooms being gender neutral, but multi-user bathrooms have architectural problems that make de-gendering very complex. The Degenderator kinetic figure gives the traditional male and female restroom symbol and combines them to make one.
Robb Godshaw is an artist, designer, engineer, and an adjunct professor of Product Design at San Francisco State University. He started this project when he was 8 and eventually tried to build it in 2012, when he was studying electrical/kinetic art at Carnegie Mellon. Robb set it aside many times, finally make a working model in 2017.After printing 25 different versions, finally he got one that was good enough to manufacture. He also learned enough to design his own versions in 3D design and simulation software, Fusion 360.
A pendulum machine perpetually moves the figure between a person in pants to a person in a dress is called “The Degenderator”. The Degenderator has just began on Kickstarter as a non-profit campaign. Half the signs manufactured are being donated, while the other half are being sold. If your business has bathrooms suitable for de-gendering, please consider backing this project.
